Assignment No 9 (19March2013)

Grapheur

An overview:
The flexible and powerful Business Intelligence and Interactive Visualization tool.
Import your data and explore, guided by your preferences and insight.
Visualize your data on the dashboard in creative ways.
Protean panels adapting to your needs and drag-and-drop for most actions.

Grapheur is a data mining, modeling and interactive visualization package implementing the reactive business intelligence approach.Preferential mapping of data and selective optimization can be done using this tool.
This is a new field of reactive business intelligence.

Grapheur originates from research principles in Reactive Search Optimization advocating the use of self-tuning schemes acting while a software system is running.

Technical Specifications:
Version 2.0 of the software was released on Sep 1, 2011, covering also the Unix and Mac OS X operating systems in addition to Windows. With version 2.0, Grapheur is dedicated to business intelligence and Interactive visualization, while the modeling and optimization tools become part of a software package called LIONsolver 2.0.

The software architecture of LIONsolver permits interactive multi-objective optimization, with a user interface for visualizing the results and facilitating the solution analysis and decision making process. The architecture allows for problem-specific extensions, and it is applicable as a post-processing tool for all optimization schemes with a number of different potential solutions. When the architecture is tightly coupled to a specific problem-solving or optimization method, effective interactive schemes where the final decision maker is in the loop can be developed.

What is it all about:
Grapheur is a new business intelligence and visualization tool that includes an easy to use geo visualization function. It has a free trial, but the software itself is not free. I was a little dubious at first at a software company that claims its software is “Awesome: Use space, time, color, shapes, blinking, sweeps, synchronization… for amazing results.” However, the amazing graphics it produces are in fact just that. Plus, most of those descriptors also describe geospatial science in general.

Troubleshooting:
They have a Doubting Thomas tab for people who are having trouble visualizing their data in the free trial. You can send them the data and they will do a free basic analysis and walk you through the steps. Their geovisualization capabilities aren’t as robust as ESRI or other GIS software but that might change if more people find it useful for geospatial work.

Functions that we have studied in MBA and that are effectively used in this software:

  • Multi-dimensional scaling
  • Reducing the dimensionality and the dataset size
  • Clustering
  • User interaction and dynamic layout

Conclusions:
We discussed the realization of a comprehensive software architecture for interactive
optimization, with a particular emphasis on supporting flexible visualization.
The main advantages of the Grapheur framework are:
Post-processing by clustering and statistical analysis. One starts from a set of
solutions, or a set of possible choices, visualizes them and discovers relationships
and hidden structure through clustering and dimensionality -reduction techniques.
Seamless navigation in solution space, also with help by cognitive sugar items.
Capacity to analyze solutions adapted to the human cognitive abilities. This requires
that the tool goes into the background, becoming virtually invisible to the
user, and that the human capability of forming mental maps and compact representations
comes to the foreground.
Versatility and neutrality: Grapheur can be used with different solution generator
software and can be easily customized for different problems and usage contexts.
Advanced human-computer interface including 3D-enabled mouse and joysticks.
The preliminary tests of the software environment in the concrete context of designing
a wireless network by placing access points have shown the effectiveness
of the approach in rapidly reaching a design preferred by the decision maker. Additional
tests are under way in different application areas and with final users of
different capabilities.

Cool Facts:
Just by learning tools like the above mentioned and others like ESRI and Erdas , one can make a full fledged career out of it.There are plenty of opportunities out there with huge amounts of salaries!!!
